Rental scams are when someone pressures you to sign a lease or give a deposit for a rental that doesn't exist or isn't available. Some signs of a rental scam include:
- The listing wasn't listed on HAR MLS or our website www.RealTechnocy.com
- The price is significantly below comparable homes in the market, it is probably a scam.
- If you are approved for a home without a credit and background check, it is a scam.
- If you are asked to sign a paper lease, it is a scam.
- The listing details are vague
- They don't want to show you the place first before signing the lease
- They're out of the country
- They want you to sign or pay right away
- The rate for a place looks too good to be true
- The address isn't verified
- No lease is available
The best defense against rental scams is to do your research. You should always try to verify that the person claiming to be the property owner is in fact a legitimate owner or sublessor of the property. If you believe you have been scammed, you can report it to the FTC.
